Biography

A voice that lives between the notes

Līga Kupča is a Latvian jazz singer with roots in the classical music tradition. She holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, having also spent time in London as part of an exchange programme during her studies. She has performed at jazz festivals including Voicingers on Tour and Saulkrasti Jazz, as well as taking part in several musical productions.

Growing up in a musical family, Līga was introduced to the vast world of music from an early age. She attended choir rehearsals and concerts led by her mother, participated in children's singing competitions, and eventually began her studies at music school, choosing the piano as her main instrument. She later studied choral conducting at a music secondary school, where she had the opportunity to experience several premieres of classical works and collaborate with prominent figures in classical music. Over time, however, Līga found herself drawn to the sound of jazz, the freedom of its musical world, and the richness of its harmonies. She went on to complete both her bachelor's and master's degrees in the Jazz Department at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music.

In 2025, Līga introduced herself as a recording artist with her debut single, "Mūžība" (Eternity), offering the first glimpse into her debut album, "Dziesmai šodien Jauna diena" (A New Day for Song Today), scheduled for release on 25 September 2026. This debut album represents Līga's first fully realised musical identity, where quotations from Latvian choral music become the starting point for a new musical language shaped by jazz harmony, improvisation, and a contemporary approach to voice and instruments.
